We probably were classmates, churchmates, web-mates, or our paths have crossed somewhere in life.
You may have seen me at a school, at a conference, on YouTube, TV, or heard me on the radio.
You may have found this website searching on the internet, was forwarded an email, poked on facebook, tweeted, got a text message from a friend, or heard the word from a family member.
I know you are here because you heard the news, read the rumors, saw the prayer list, or someone told you that I was "Coming Out". YES I AM!
Now you can hear for yourselves the ACCURATE FACTS and not the gossip and rumors. However you ended up here, I'm so glad that you did!
I'm "Coming Out" to be a better person. I'm coming out to share my personal MESS, my story, my pains, my gains so that I can help others become a SUCCESS.

I'm very passionate about what you are about to read. I need you to be serious, because I have been dealing with this issue for YEARS. My family has been affected, my relationships have been altered, it caused me problems on my jobs, and even some promotions were not received because it was such a big issue.
So here are the FACTS and the ugly truths. I must come clean with my secret.
FACT #1 - I was born in a Middle Class BROKE Family.
I was raised in Decatur, Georgia to two lovely parents that nurtured me, loved me and even "WOOPED" me from time to time. Actually it was a LOT of times. My last wooping was when I was 18 years of age. That was a site to see; it looked like a WWF three man battle royal match.
I am the MAN I am today because of my mother, father, Mr. Belt and Mr. Switch; and there were many others that influenced me along the way. THANK YOU ALL! I guess all the woopings were good, because they sensed that one day I would be doing something as crazy as this.
Like a lot of middle class people, we lived paycheck to paycheck and some kind of way my parents always made it happen. Even though there was not financial excess, we never missed a meal or lived on the street.
I vowed to myself that I would stop this cycle and do better.

FACT #2 - My mom instantly dropped me off at the nearest school, but the girls there didn't like me.
I started pre-K at the age of 3 months and during this time of my life, my mind was being framed. Framed to think a certain way, framed to live a certain way and framed to make choices a CERTAIN way.
During pre-K is when I was introduced to relationships. There was one relationship with a female student that "jacked" me up for years. While chasing her and wanting to get to know her - she "brushed me off". She brushed the dust off of me because I had just fell and hit my mouth on the corner of the table. With blood flowing from my mouth and my teeth now 'jacked up' she yelled for the teacher and all the other girls said "Ooooooo, Kantis teeth are messed up", and they too ran away.
My middle class parents spent 6 years financing my silver grill - "braces".
After that point, the girls didn't talk to me. I was cool with it though. But recovering from my crooked teeth and dealing with my other hidden insecurities, I didn't confidentially step to them any longer. As I got older, I was still hesitant to approach young ladies because I didn't want them to think I had the "Cooties". Some thought it, but " Oh Well", they are not in my life now.
This issue has hindered me long enough.
Hold on. There are more startling FACTS that you must know so you understand my problem.
FACT #3 - For 7 years I attended RAINBOW, I was on the JUMP ROPE TEAM.
Yes, you read that correctly - The JUMP ROPE TEAM. So, please stop laughing at me.
Even though I had a great primary education at Rainbow Elementary (Decatur, Georgia), and did pretty well in the classroom; I don't like discussing my Jump Rope Team experiences. I was 1 of 3 guys on the "Rainbow Jumpers". Telling you this is kind of embarrassing. It is really embarrassing because 1) I never learned how to 'Double-Dutch' and 2) they made us wear those tight-tight shorts that were popular in the 80s, with the knee-high white tube sock. UGHHHHH!.
I would show you a picture of me and the "Rainbow Jumpers", but it may end up on my facebook, myspace, youtube or any of my social sites. I don't want that picture to hurt me or people take it the wrong way.
So here's another one of me to prove to you that I was definitely a "head turner" back in the day. But it was me with the inferiority complex.

FACT #4 - I was a CHOIR BOY. For 20 years I stood in front of church folk and moved my hands.
From the age of 8 to 28, I directed choirs in Baptist Churches (except the last one). I stood in front of people. I led them. I spoke to them. I taught them. I sang for a few. I even encouraged a few. And I know there are some that are still mad at me because I ticked them off. When it came to learning the music, singing the music and working for "The Master" - He and I just wanted EXCELLENCE. Anything else is uncivilized.
Some even called me "Kirk Kantis Franklin." Though many years had past many of them didn't even notice my challenge.

FACT #5 - I am a very PASSIONATE person. I only want the best and want to offer the best. That's why I only do things with CERTAIN people.
I believe my parents knew that one day I would be "coming out" about my mess, so they TRIED to always keep me busy doing positive things.
Yes, I said NO to drugs.
Yes, I looked both ways while crossing the road.
Yes, I respected my elders.
Yes, I kept more money than I spent (or at least tried to at times),
but it was other stuff that I dealt with secretly.
But I'm coming out today!!
1. While playing organized baseball, I caused a real stir in the stands one day. A lot of the parents were whispering and gossiping on my every move. When I came to bat, all eyes were on me and it was because I was a little different - I could hear them whispering "Oooooo, he's so special". Between innings I would run to play second base or shortstop, and I would see the parents constantly talking and gesturing.
I guess they were noticing my secret back in the day, and honestly it made me feel uncomfortable.
2. As the Head Drum Major of the best band in the country, I would often sense in MY mind that 15,000 roaring fans were always talking about my mess. Uggghhh, they we always whipped the other school's football team and band - those Friday nights under the lights were rough for me.
After graduating from college, I was asked to be the special Head Drum Major of the Marching Band for the Opening Ceremony of the 1996 Olympic Games. I was just that good...or did they see me as "special" too?
Though it was all mental, I felt that 85 Billion viewers were looking at me strut, but at the same time noticing my flaw. But what made it comfortable was the guys close to me that had accepted me for what I was. (We were so good, that Nick Cannon got a movie deal from all our work - Drum Line).
3. It slowed me down when applying for certain jobs. I remember when interviewing at NASA, Mobil Chemical, and CIBA Vision the look each employer gave me when I walked into his or her office. Instantly I thought, "here we go again - they are not going to accept me", but they did.
While working in the laboratory or working on military aircraft, I would find myself suspicious of who noticed me and my challenge.

FACT #6 - I spent 25 years in school and earned 3 DEGREES all while being an honor student.
This was definitely a long journey. I had always looked for the NERDS in my school, but now after all my academic success, I realize that I might have been that NERD....but I was a Cool Nerd though.
During that time in school, I learned and cracked the "code" for total academic success. But there was that ONE THING that I always battled with.
While attending and graduating from Norfolk State University, Lehigh University, and Georgia Tech, that one thing followed me - and today, it STILL DOES. But I want you to know.

FACT #7 - I received more than $300,000 in scholarship money and even got a scholarship from a sorority
Everything there is to know about locating scholarships, getting scholarship money, and keeping scholarship money I have mastered. There is so much stuff out there for financing your education, that you must simply learn "the system."
I'm convinced that MONEY DOES GROW ON TREES, you just need to know which TREE to look on.
